Barley Straw Floats

Barley straw has not been tested by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an Algaecide. Barley straw has no label for, and cannot be sold as an Algaecide. Our own experience and the research of others indicates that barley straw is effective for this purpose. Due to EPA restrictions our Barley Straw must be sold as a totally organic lake clearant.

Straw in compressed form such as bales does not work.  Our applications using loose straw and one of our floats anchored near the aerator have been most effective.

The 5x10 Barley Float floats up to 140 pounds of straw inside.  Net bags containing 10 pounds of barley straw can be added to the outside ring of the barge to obtain the correct dosage for your lake.

The 4x6 float has a lower profile for small ponds and can be used to float 120 to 140 pounds of straw by tying net bags to the float.

We have maintained control of algae by applying 2 to 2.5 pounds of straw for each 500 square feet of lake surface. If applied later in the season, a chemical application may be necessary to kill existing algae.  If applied early in the spring the straw may have to be changed mid-season.

Cost estimate for materials to do the initial treatment on a 1 acre lake would be $270.00 plus labor to install, or shipping or travel.
